Iwork Vs. Office For Mac

I actually prefer Mac for Office. I feel like Apple's design simplicity just doesn't work well with their iWork suite. Also, I've had trouble recently with the.pages format.

1. Iwork For Macbook

I was creating files for a job on my iPad using Pages, then finishing them on my computer. The files had to be in.docx format, and it was a pain to switch them all over. Seems like I used to just be able to change the '.pages' to '.docx' in the filename, but now it creates some folder with some zip images. It was very strange. Anyway, the only thing I really like about iWork is the iCloud and how quickly files stay updated between devices.

MS Office with Dropbox is an ok substitute. I have used MS Office on my MBP's since I started using them (2006) - Trying to learn the layout and work flow of the iWork series just didnt appeal to me back when I started in with Macs but now I just dont see a solid benefit to use it over Office, especially because Office is the dominant suite in the PC world. With Microsofts recent embrace of OS X and iOS, I can only imagine its a matter of time before we see a streamlined and optimized Office product for use across all mac platforms.

I feel as professionals could benefit from word over pages, and from excel over numbers, though for the average person iWork gets the job done fine and is easier to use as well as often looks nicer in my opinion (without much formatting that is). ICloud support is also key, especially with the ability to view and edit documents online, with many more features then Google docs. For me, iWork works great, for the professional, Office may work better. Keynote however is much better than PowerPoint. Just remember to export to.doc,.xls, or.ppt if submitting or for use on a PC. For me, a student, I exclusively use iWork for all humanities subjects. For biotechnology however, the limited citation functions and non existing support for formulas are absolutely deal breaker for me.

I have sometimes written 10+ pages in pages to convert them to.docx and have images all over the document. As for numbers, my use is very limited. It seems to have the formulas I need like =STDEV and that, but I haven't found a way to color code cells based on their values (highest number red, lowest green etc). As for keynote that's the only presentation software I need. It's practically perfect. I really wanted to switch to iWork now that I use a Mac.

However it just doesn't come close. If you have anything other than very simple spreadsheets then they just aren't compatible between the two. Microsoft to be fair have done an amazing job with office on the iPad. It's a shame that office for Mac was delayed but it's likely to be very good when it arrives in 2015.
